SCRPA Programs & Projects

The SCRPA actively sponsors the following activities to promote interest in rail safety, history and education:

Fullerton Train Museum

The SCRPA’s Fullerton Train Museum maintains a permanent exhibit of six vintage rail cars that are open for free tours twice-monthly: from 9 a.m. to noon on the first and third Saturdays of each month. The railcar collection includes:

  • 1951 Santa Fe 85 foot Streamlined Sleeping Car
  • 1929 Santa Fe Cupola Steel Way Car (caboose)
  • 1942 Union Pacific Tall Cupola Steel caboose
  • 1961 Southern Pacific Bay Window Steel Caboose
  • 1949 Union Pacific 85-foot Streamlined Lunch Counter-Diner-Lounge
  • 1949 Union Pacific 85-foot Streamlined Dormitory-Lounge

Railroad Safety Poster Contest

The annual Railroad Safety Poster Contest is an opportunity to work with local schools to teach younger children about the dangers of being around trains. Through classroom participation and individual thought expressed through safety posters, SCRPA is able to supplement the work of the Operation Life Saver programs sponsored by the nation’s railroads.

Members' Quarterly Dinners & General Meetings

The SCRPA Members' Quarterly Dinners & General Meetings bring together the diverse membership for an evening of discussions of mutual interest, updates on SCRPA activities, and interesting guest speakers who provide timely information on rail related topics.

Excursions

Popular Excursions organized by the Membership Committee offer seasonal outings by motor coach to destinations throughout the Southland and beyond for a special train ride or to tour rail displays. Excursions have included Fillmore & Western Railway Co.’s special trains, complete with dining car meals; and the Union Pacific’s Sesquicentennial exhibit at the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens. Check our events calendar for upcoming excursions.

Hot Rail! Quarterly Newsletter

Hot Rail!, the SCRPA membership quarterly newsletter, is the main source of news, status of projects, and articles on historical and current subjects for the membership. The newsletter is distributed electronically to all members and is also available online where the photographs are in full color.

Railroad Operations Committee (ROC)

SCRPA has formed the Railroad Operations Committee to plan and complete the conservation of six vintage railcars on display at the Fullerton Depot, 120 E. Santa Fe Avenue. ROC members hold a Work Party on the first and third Saturdays each month at the Fullerton station tracks, completing hands-on projects on our rail cars. They also offer free tours to the public from 9 a.m. to noon during their twice-monthly sessions. No reservations are needed.
